The National Conference on Soviet Jewry has learned that former Prisoner of Conscience Dr. Chaim Rennert has arrived in Israel. A radiologist, he was sentenced to five years in a prison camp for allegedly attempting to bribe an official of the Soviet emigration office for an exit visa. Rennert first applied to emigrate in 1965 to join his mother and sister who had left for Israel that year. While serving his prison sentence he was routinely beaten and tortured during interrogations, the NCSJ said.
