The New York Federation of Reform Synagogues has commended Mayor Edward Koch for his “courageous stand with respect to the rights of homosexuals to equal consideration for jobs in the (city) government.” This view was contained in a letter to Koch signed by Sydney J. Schwartz, president, and Rabbi Stuart A. Gertman, director of the Federation. The letter added: “For us, this is an issue of civil rights and equal justice.” The Reform group also sent messages to City Council members urging them to support Koch’s position.
