The next round of indirect peace talks between Israel and Syria were postponed.
Israel requested the delay in the Turkish-mediated talks, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Moallem told reporters in Damascus, Reuters reported. They were scheduled to begin Thursday.
“When Israel is ready to resume the talks, we will be ready as well,” Moallem said.
The talks center on final borders of an Israeli withdrawal from the Golan Heights, which were captured by Israel from Syria in 1967.
Syrian President Bashar Assad said earlier this month that the talks were postponed at Israel’s request following the resignation of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s general secretary, Yoram Turbowicz, the chief negotiator of the Syrian track.
