The number of new HIV cases in Israel has risen 50 percent since 2004, the Israel AIDS Taskforce said.

Though diagnoses of new cases fell in 2006, the number of HIV-positive people in Israel increased substantially in 2007, according to Israel’s Health Ministry.

At the end of 2007, Israel had 5,300 HIV-positive people, according to the Health Ministry. The Israel AIDS Taskforce believes there are at least that many additional HIV cases that are undiagnosed.

The rising infection rate is attributed to people who are unaware that they carry the disease, are not receiving treatment and are infecting others as a consequence.
