The Palestine Hebrew paper “Ha’ Aretz,” in an editorial, gives details regarding the incident of Attorney General Bentwich’s contribution to the constable fund. A special committee consisting of the wives of high Palestine officials, headed by Mrs. Hearon, the wife of the Chief of the Public Health Department, circularized high British officials with the request that they make donations to a fund to be given the special British constables for their work during the outbreak. One official under Attorney General Bentwich, consulted his chief as to how much he ought to donate. Mr. Bentwich thereupon sent his own donation, thinking that the circular had accidentally not been sent to him. It developed, however, that the circular was sent only to Christian officials. Rumors current that the Attorney General’s check was returned were denied by Mr. Bentwich and others. The Hebrew newspapers, pointing out that no Jewish officials received the circular, declares that this incident indicates anti-Jewish feeling among the British officials, in whom the fate of the country is entrusted.
