The Polish Cabinet said it would not remove crosses recently put up outside the site of the Auschwitz death camp. In a statement, the government said it was up to the Vatican, as a result of an agreement between Poland and the Church, to decide what to do with religious symbols. Meanwhile, nationalist and Catholic activists erected two additional 9-foot crosses near the camp.
