The president of Agudath Israel of America, Rabbi Moshe Sherer, died just hours before the organization held its annual dinner in New York. Sherer led the fervently Orthodox umbrella organization for more than 50 years. At the dinner, the organization presented U.S. Vice President Al Gore with its annual humanitarian award. But the award came with an appeal from Agudah official David Zwiebel to the vice president to “distance” himself from the voices that “raise Palestinian expectations.” Gore responded by saying that “Israel alone must decide the steps necessary” to ensure its own security.
