The proclamation of the second Jewish region in the Ukraine will be made officially by the end of August it was announced today in a governmental proclamation.
It was officially stated that because of the fact that the region is located in territory where the pogrom bands of the Ukrainian Attaman Machno raged and where the peasants participated in the anti-Jewish massacres, the Ukrainian government has directed on inquiry to a number of the non-Jewish villages as to whether they would object to being included in the Jewish region. Their reply was that they have no objection to being part of the region. The economic development in the new region, Vasilenko, secretary of the Ukrainian Zik, Central Executive Committee, explained to the corres- (Continued on Page 4)
“The economic development in the new region will undoubtedly aid our construction plans on the river Dnieper,” Vasilenko said.
Publishing the text of the government’s proclamation concerning the establishment of the second Jewish region, the Yiddish Communist dailies, “Emes” and “Stern,” urge that this fact is not to provoke among Russian Jews any nationalistic feelings. “Those Soviet Zionists who have transferred their Herzlian dreams to the Soviet soil, dreaming of a Jewish state from Kertch to Egypt, should forget their Chauvinistic, national high politics,” says the “Emes.”
The Charkoff “Stern” comments in a similar vein. “We do not consider the new region as a gain of the Jews of a loss to others. We consider it a natural result of the Soviet national minorities policy,” the paper says.
