To the Editor, Jewish Daily Bulletin:
Your paper is to be commended for the stand taken by Boris Smolar on the question of relief for Polish Jewry and aid for Palestine.
The Polish Jews, we are constantly being informed, are slowly but surely being frozen out of the economic life of the so-called republic. What this means, with its indescribable misery, is difficult to portray.
And yet we are told that huge amounts should not be sent to the desperately needy of the population, estimated at fully half of the 3,500,000 Jews there.
Palestine, on the contrary, is practically self-supporting. By that I do not mean that money-raising efforts should be halted to further the development of the Jewish Homeland.
But let us be more generous to our stricken brethren in Poland. Let us alleviate their misery, not of their making, as fully as possible as is consistent with Jewish aims the world over. Let us remember that 3,500,000 Jews, almost a quarter of Jewry, resided in Poland. Let us not forget that practically 2,000,000 of them are in want and that 1,500,000 are absolutely dependent upon charity for the every essential of life.
More power to the Joint Distribution Committee for its excellent work and to Mr. Smolar, who is revealing the startling conditions of Polish Jewry!
