The Reichs Institute for the History of the New Germany today announced a prize competition for a dissertation on “The History of the Court Jew in Austria.” All German scientists and historians are invited to participate in the contest, which closes Dec. 1.
The so-called court Jews, (in German, Hofjuden) played a part in the courts of the Austrian emperors in the seventeenth, eighteenth and beginning of the nineteenth centuries. Mostly wealthy business men, they rose to positions close to the rulers, and were frequently of service to their fellow Jews in securing abatement of persecution.
