The Republican leadership in the U.S. Congress backed President Clinton in using all necessary force if Iraqi President Saddam Hussein continues to block U.N. weapons inspections in Iraq. Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.), referring to the sex scandal plaguing the White House, said Saddam “might be confused by the difference between headlines and the national will.” The Senate majority leader, Trent Lott (R-Miss.), gave Clinton his backing earlier in the week.
