The Soviet Union has pledged to provide Syria with an air umbrella in the event of another war with Israel, and Soviet staffed MIG-25 interceptors may soon be based in Syria, according to the authoritative London-based magazine, “Arabia and the Gulf.” The USSR is about to send its second consignment of weapons to Syria since the beginning of the year, including a squadron of MIG-23 fighter-bombers, T-62 tanks, the magazine said. The latest improvement in relations between the two countries is based on their joint hostility to Egyptian President Anwar Sadat’s Middle East diplomacy.
