The spiritual leaders of two fervently Orthodox parties in Israel said any Supreme Court ruling that goes against Jewish religious law is invalid. The statement from the leaders of Degel HaTorah and Agudat Yisrael came in the wake of a recent high court decision requiring the government to appoint Conservative and Reform members to local religious councils. Meanwhile, Knesset members from the two parties are vowing to block the nation’s 1999 budget bill unless several pieces of legislation are enacted to protect Orthodox interests.
