The swamp region in White Russia is to be drained to provide land for extending Jewish colonization work in that region, according to a decision adopted today by the praesidium of the National Minorities Council of the Zik, central executive committee.
The resolution declares that although there is a dearth of land in White Russia. Jewish colonization work is highly important and the White Russian Government is urged to immediately start the amelioration work.
A report submitted to the National Minorities Council shows that the number of Jewish merchants in the region has decreased. Thirty percent of the small town Jewish population has been transformed into workers. The Jews in White Russia constitute 8 percent of the general population which numbers 5,000,000.
Two hundred and sixty Jewish families from the town Smilovitch will be settled on land in the neighborhood, according to a decision of the district Sovnarkom, Government agency.
Rabbi Isaac Landman, Chairman of the Special Committee of the Central Conference of American Rabbis and Dr. Cyrus Adler have addressed a letter to the Rabbis of America in behalf of the annual Passover appeal for the American Pro-Falasha Committee and its school for the Falashas in Abyasinia, Hyman J. Reit, chairman of the American Pro-Falasha Committee announced.
The Councils of Jewish Women and the Sisterhoods of the National Federation of Temple Sisterhoods and the Women’s League of the United Synagogue of America are also making the annual Passover appropriations for the Falasha program, Mr. Reit stated.
The Young People’s League of the United Synagogue of America has again undertaken to provide college students who are away from home, strangers in the city, and young people who have no other Seders to attend, with a Seder Service.

The second National Oratorical Contest of Young Judaea has been started in the Young Judaca clubs throughout the country.
The subject of this year’s contest is “Palestine and American Jewry.”
All Young Judaea members between between the ages of 15 and 18 are eligible for the contest. Preliminary contests will be held by club representatives in the various districts, with further eliminations to be held in the 12 regions into which the country has been divided. The contest will culminate with final competitions at the National Convention of Young Judaea the latter part of June. The first prize will be a trip to Palestine and back, donated by Emanuel Rosen of the Palestine and Oriental Tours.
