The top lobbyist in Washington for American Jewish federations asked Congress to renew for two years the law that eases immigration for Jews from the former Soviet Union. Diana Aviv, director of the Washington Action Office of the Council of Jewish Federations, made the request for an extension of the Lautenberg Amendment in testimony to a House International Relations subcommittee. “It is increasingly unsafe and potentially disastrous for Jews and other religious minorities residing” in the former Soviet Union, Aviv said in her testimony, citing the recent rise in anti-Semitism.
