The U.S. State Department warned Russia that it could be denied American assistance if it concludes a new weapons deal with Syria. Tuesday’s warning came as Syrian President Hafez Assad is making a two-day visit to Moscow. Syria wants to purchase modern Russian SU-27 fighter jets to replace its outdated Soviet-made MIGs, as well as tanks, anti-aircraft systems and anti-tank missiles.
