The United States is likely to resume the role of facilitator rather than active mediator in Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations, according to the U.S. ambassador to Israel. During a meeting with Israeli Foreign Minister David Levy on Monday, Edward Walker also said President Clinton believes the election of Prime Minister Ehud Barak provides a “golden opportunity” to boost U.S.- Israeli relations. Those ties were often strained during the previous, Likud- led government.
