The United States is offering Israel a mutual defense pact as part of any peace package with Syria, the Israeli daily Ha’aretz reported. The paper said Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak does not want a full-fledged pact since that would limit Israel’s freedom of action, but he might welcome a pact that focuses on defense in case of attack by weapons of mass destruction.
