The Vatican representative dealing with a controversial mosque in Nazareth described the project as “a clear provocation.” Addressing a special ministerial committee formed by the Israeli government, Father Pierbattista Pizzaballa said that construction of the Shihab al-Din mosque next to the Church of the Annunciation “is unacceptable to the Christian world,” adding that “the Muslims’ intention was not one of coexistence, but the opposite.”
