The Vatican said it had completed the draft of a document in which the Roman Catholic Church might ask for forgiveness for its past treatment of Jews. It is unclear when the document, which will be presented to a commission for discussion next week, will be released. Some Jewish leaders criticized a Vatican document released earlier this year for absolving the wartime pope, Pius XII, for his actions during the Holocaust.
