There must be no government “stalling” in moving 100,000 Jewish refugees from Europe to Palestine, Senate majority leader Alben W. Barkley yesterday told 500 Jewish community leaders at a luncheon meeting of the Gulf Region Conference of the United Palestine Appeal, held at the Roosevelt Hotel here.
Sen. Barkley commanded the Anglo-American committee for supporting President Truman’s demand that 100,000 European Jews be admitted to Palestine immediately. Continued homelessness of 1,400,000 Jews in Europe is a vital problem not only to Jews, but to our entire civilization, he declared, adding that it is against the best interests of world peace to leave the Jewish problem in Europe unsolved. Among the other speakers at the conference were Rev. Wendell Phillips, Episcopalian minister of Rye, N.Y., and Isaac Heller, president of the Jewish Welfare Fund of New Orleans.
