The third trial of a 55-year-old former Gestapo official on charges of mass shootings of Jews in occupied Russia get under way here today.
Gerhard Schneider had been tried twice on charges of five mass shootings in 1951, involving the murder of 320 Jewish men, women and children. He was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment at hard labor after the first trial, and the sentence was reduced to six years at the second trial. On appeal, the High Court held that a third trial would be necessary.
