Thirteen citizens of the mountain town of Koppern in Hesse have been indicted here on charges of disturbing the peace following attacks on a Jewish baker, Kurt Sumpf, and his family.
The incident began when Sumpf and the son of a former Nazi hoodlum became embroiled in an argument. Shortly afterwards a shot was fired into a tavern, narrowly missing Sumpf. Several men publicly stated “the Jew should be shot” and afterwards three men beat the baker. Several policemen stood and looked on during the attack. His eight-year-old son has become the butt of anti-Semitic taunts by schoolmates.
