Nearly 1,000 persons, including leaders in all walks of life, attended funeral services this morning for David Shapiro, founder and publisher of The Day, who died Friday night at the age of 68. Burial was in the Lebanon Cemetery. Messages of condolence continued to reach Shapiro’s family from many parts of the country.
The services were held at the Riverside Memorial Chapel. Rabbi Israel Levinthal, who officiated, stressed Shapiro’s role in communal life in New York and his deep interest in Palestine.
Among those who sent messages of condolence were Governor Herbert H. Lehman, Senators Robert F. Wagner and James M. Mead, Dr. Stephen S. Wise, Dr. Israel Goldstein, Judge Morris Rothenberg and Louis Lipsky. Among the organizations which sent statements were the United Jewish Appeal, American Jewish Congress, Zionist Organization of America and Jewish Writers’ Club.
