Demonstrations and memorial services were held throughout Israel today, marking the end of the seven mourning days for the death of Emil Grunzweig, killed in a grenade attack on a Peace Now demonstration outside the Prime Minister’s office in Jerusalem last week.
Demonstrations organized by Peace Now were held in the three main cities. An estimated 3,000 people gathered at the scene of the murder, in pouring rain, to hear author Amos Oz and other speakers.
In Tel Aviv, some 500 people gathered in the square before the municipality building, in a brief halt between heavy rainstorms. The gathering was addressed by former Labor Party Knesset member Arye Eliav. Several hundred people gathered in Haifa, also
The Israel Journalists Association held a special meeting in Tel Aviv to protest recent acts of physical violence and threats against free speech. Speakers noted that journalists stand in the front line of the fight against violence and for freedom of expression. Many journalists have received threats of violence in recent months, the Association noted.
Representatives of II youth movements met in the square before the Tel Aviv Museum this afternoon to protest against the increasing wave of violence. President Yitzhak Navon appealed for mutual understands between all sections of the public, despite ethnic and political differences. The youth organizations met under the slogan, “Debate and Discussion, Yes; Violence, No.”
