More than 10,000 refugees, many of them Jewish, have been evacuated to the United States, North Africa and various American republics this year through Spain, and a total of 4,500 such refugees were evacuated in 1943. according to an announcement by the State Department yesterday.
Evacuation of the refugees was handled by the “Representation in Spain of American Relief Organizations” which includes the Joint Distribution Committee, the American Friends Service Committee, the Unitarian Service Committee and the War Relief Services of the National Catholic Welfare Conference. The relief groups were assisted by the American Embassy and the Spanish Government, the announcement said, citing efforts by the Spanish authorities which resulted in saving several hundred Sephardic Jews from deportation to Poland.
