Several thousand persons today paid a last tribute to Daniel Frisch, president of the Zionist Organization of America who died yesterday, following a major operation. Hundreds of those who came to attend the funeral services stood outside the chapel unable to gain admittance to the crowded parlor.
Israel Ambassador Eliahu Elath and Consul General Arthur Lourie were among the speakers who eulogized the late Zionist leader. They emphasized that the people of Israel will honor the memory of Mr. Frisch who, despite his ill health, proceeded to the Jewish state to study conditions on the spot and to establish there an American Zionist House symbolizing the permanent interest of American Jewry in Israel.
Dr. Nahum Goldmann, chairman of the American section of the Jewish Agency said in his oulogy that Mr. Frisch had devoted his energies to cementing unity in the ranks of American Zionism. Among the others who spoke at the services were Louis Lip-sky, president of the American Zionist Council; Mendel Fisher, executive director of the Jewish National Fund of America, and Dr. Samuel Margoshes.
Benjamin Browdy, acting president of the Z.O.A., was unable to attend the services because of illness, but a message was read for him by Dr. Sidney Marks, executive director of the Z.O.A. Also read was a message from Dr. Abba Hillel Silver, who was prevented from attended the funeral because he had to address a meeting of the United Jewish Appeal in Miami.
ZIONIST DELEGATION ESCORTS BODY TO INDIANAPOLIS FOR BURIAL
The body of the late Z.O.A. president was moved in the late afternoon from New York to Indianapolis for burial. It was accompanied by a delegation which included Dr. Marks, Abraham A. Redelbeim, David Moskowitz, Dr. Morton J. Robbins, Max Bressler, I.S. Turover, Mr. Fisher and Fred Monosson.
The death of Mr. Frisch was mourned today by numerous national Jewish organizations including: the Hadassah, Jewish National Fund, B’nai B’rith, American Zionist Council, American Fund for Israel Institution, Labor Zionist Organization of America, the Jewish National Workers Alliance of America, and others. “The Jewish world is saddened and Jewry is impoverished by the passing of a devoted, consecrated and gifted son of his people,” Mrs. Samuel B. Halprin, national president of Hadassah, said in a statement issued to the press.
Mr. Lourie sent a message last night to the Zionist Organization of America stating: “The people of Israel mourn deeply the death of Daniel Frisch whose life, dedicated to the cause of Zion, came to a premature and untimely end this morning. In his brief administration as president of the Zionist Organization of America, Daniel Frisch gave all his devotion and strength in a tireless and constructive effort to strengthen the ties that knit the people of Israel and the people of America.”
