The Jewish community here paid tribute to the memory of 6,000,000 Jews martyred in history’s most horrifying example of man’s inhumanity to man. Several thousand persons stood with bowed heads as the ancient Jewish chant for the dead, “El Molay Rahamim” was sung in memory of Jews murdered in the era of Nazi Germany.
The memorial ceremony at the Monument to the Six Million Jewish Martyrs was held marking the 22nd anniversary of the uprising by the Jews of the Warsaw Chetto against the Germans. The bronze 18-foot high monument was unveiled April 26 of last year and was formally presented to the City of Philadelphia. It had been created in Italy by sculptor Nathan Rapoport and was brought here by the Federation of Jewish Agencies and the Association of Jewish New Americans. The latter group is composed of survivors of German atrocities.
The memorial service was co-sponsored by the Federation of Jewish Agencies and the Association. The principle speaker was Superior Court Judge J. Sydney Hoffman. Nochem S. Winnet, president of the Federation, told the gathering that the monument has much to say to all men about the issues of justice and freedom.
