Threats and pressure tactics used by the World Jewish Congress against French banks are harming efforts to resolve Holocaust-era claims, the head of France’s Jewish community said. During a trip to Washington last week, Henri Hajdenberg, president of an umbrella organization representing French Jews, warned American Jewish groups against calling for a boycott of French banks. The WJC has threatened to block a pending merger of French banks and may also ask U.S. states and cities to refuse to buy letters of credit from the banks when a committee of U.S. public finance officers meets next month to examine how French banks are handling Holocaust issues.
