A three-day conference of prominent Christian and Jewish leaders in Germany interested in the interfaith movement opened here today. Among the matters under discussion at the parley will be The Hague reparations negotiations, the problem of Christian-Jewish cooperation and mixed marriages.
Horst Staebler, a miner, has been sentenced to one year in jail by a German court in Dusseldorf for entering a synagogue last year and shouting insults at the congregation. Among other remarks Staebler made was that “not enough of you Jewish swine were gassed.”
The Hamburg Senate has denied Hjalmar Schacht, onetime financial advisor to Hitler, permission to establish a banking firm with a capitalization of 1,000,000 deutschemarks. Although no reason was given for the Senate’s action a spokesman for that body commented that Schacht’s attitude during the Nazi era had apparently not been forgotten by the German people.
