The American Jewish Congress, the Catholic Interracial Council and the Protestant Council of the City of New York joined today in a statement condemning as "black Nazism" an article published in the African-American Teachers Association "Forum" charging "anti-black Jews" and "black Anglo-Saxons" with "educational perfidy."
The tri-faith statement described the article by John Hatchett, a former substitute teacher at P.S. 68 in Harlem, as "a naked appeal to racial and religious hatred." In the article, Mr. Hatchett said Negro children were "educationally castrated" and "mentally poisoned" by "Jews who dominate and control the educational bureaucracy of the New York public school system and their power-starved imitators, the black Anglo-Saxon."
Spokesmen for the three religious groups voiced confidence that Mr. Hatchett’s views would be rejected by "the overwhelming majority of the black community of our city." They also joined in a pledge "that this obscene article will not swerve us from the path we have chosen in consonance with the spiritual imperatives of our religious heritage: the pursuit of full equality in a free society for all Americans."
