Three freshmen Jewish members of the U.S. Congress began their two-year terms when the 106th Congress opened its session. Reps. Shelley Berkley (D-Nev.), Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) and Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) were among the 23 Jewish representatives in the new House of Representatives, down from 25 in the 105th Congress. Former Rep. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) was sworn in to serve in the Senate, which has 11 Jews, a record number.
