Police continued their search today for vandals who broke into three Jewish cemeteries during the High Holy Days and toppled a total of 47 tombstones and broke six others.
Twenty-five were overturned and six broken at the Rodef Sholom Cemetery, which is operated by an Orthodox synagogue. At the nearby Community Synagogue Cemetery, 20 headstones were toppled. Two were turned over at the Emeth Sholom Cemetery.
Sam Widlansky, president of Rodef Sholom, said that John Foley, caretaker of the cemetery, spotted the vandals on a return visit after Yom Kippur. He said the caretaker reported he saw three men buy liquor and then move into the cemetery grounds. He called state police. A trooper told the men they were on private property and ordered them to leave, the caretaker said.
