Three Likud mayors have announced that they will stand for re-election in next month’s municipal balloting as independents rather than representatives of Likud. That news shocked the party machine and it is making strenuous efforts to presuade the three to change their minds. The final list of candidates must be submitted to the local election committees by tonight.
The Likud defectors are Mayors Israel Peled of Ramat Gan, Yehezkel Harmelech of Rehovot, and Eli Landau of Herzlia. They said they would not run on the Likud ticket because they object to some of the candidates Likud selected to run with them for election to the town councils. The local election process was changed four years ago whereby Mayors run as individuals but council members are elected from party lists.
