A joint Israel-Japanese-Swiss fishing company has commenced operations in South Atlantic waters,, catching tuna and other fish for the Israel market, the Ministry of Commerce announced today.
The company, set up during the recent visit of Commerce Minister Pinhas Saphir to Japan, has one ship, the Shimu Maru, at work and will obtain other fishing craft in Japan, as well as a large mother ship equipped to clean and freeze the fleet’s catch.
The Shimu Maru is expected to put in at Haifa in October to take aboard a number of Israeli sailors to be trained in deep sea fishing. The Japanese partners in the venture are now in Israel seeking additional capital investment for the company.
