Three Scrolls of the Law belonging to the Jewish community of Fuerth, Germany, which were hidden from the Nazis throughout the war, were handed over today to the Synagogue Council of America by a three-member delegation of German Jewish leaders brought to the U.S. under the Council’s auspices for a six-week stay.
Speaking at the ceremony, held at a Council plenary primary session in the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue here, the visitors from Germany–Dr. Aaron Ohrenstein, Jean Randal and Ernest Landau–emphasized that every Jew “living in, Germany today mats to leave that country as quickly as possible.” Among those still remaining in Germany, they said, were persons pressing restitution claims, as well as ill and aged refugees.
Mr. Landau stressed that the future of the Jaws remaining in Germany depends largely on American and British Jewry. “You can give us the moral support necessary in our many struggles,” he said, adding that “we are fighting against anti-Semitism and for the restitution of Jewish property, because we will never let those who are responsible for the slaughter of 6,000,000 Jews become the heirs of their property.”
