Three young Israeli Jews were convicted in District Court here today of spying for Egypt. They are Gideon Goldstein, 20, of Acre; Isaac Fishman, 18, and Yoel Reizmann, 16, both of Haifa. All three, now awaiting sentence, were arrested last February, but the case was not made public until after their conviction today.
According to the charges, Goldstein infiltrated into the Egypt-held Gaza Strip, where he met Egyptian agents. The latter offered him 500 Israeli pounds (about $167) per month for furnishing information about Israeli army movements. The two others were accused of having been recruited for spying activities by members of Egypt’s intelligence corps.
The youths had allegedly collected information about army movements for two months, then tried to sneak across the Gaza Strip border to pass on the data they had accumulated. They turned back, however, when they were spotted by members of the United Nations Emergency Force guarding that frontier. They then returned to their homes and, later, Goldstein and Fishman smuggled themselves as stowaways onto a Norwegian ship bound for Italy.
