Formation of a legislative council as has been projected for Palestine would mean the relegation of the Jewish Agency for Palestine to a secondary place in representing the Jews in dealings with Great Britain, and consequently the council is opposed by the Jews, states the London Times today in a dispatch from Jerusalem.
The Times points out that the Jewish Agency, which is composed of Zionist and non-Zionist leaders and is the official body representing world Jewry in dealings with the League of Nations and the mandatory power for Palestine, would be displaced by the Jewish members of the legislative council.
“The Jews dislike an arrangement which would displace the present Jewish representation visa-vis the Government of the Jewry-backed Jewish Agency by a half-dozen local Jews,” the Times declares.
The newspaper declared that High Commissioner Sir Arthur Grenfell Wauchope will remain in London for at least two months instead of the short period expected and will conclude arrangements with the Colonial Office for setting up a legislative council in the Holy Land.
Questions concerning Jewish immigration and the sale of land to Jews will also be included in the competence of the new legislative council, the London paper asserts.
