Governor Moore said yesterday that he would accede to the wishes of Republican leaders if they desire a special session to change the date of the proposed voting on constitutional amendments from Sept. 27, the date of Rosh Ha’shanah, although he is not convinced it is necessary. The Governor said he believed the Jewish members of the Assembly would have opposed the date, if there had been any real opposition to the date set.
“But with the Jewish people not voting,” he said, “it would not be a fair test of sentiment on the problems to be voted upon.”
One of the proposed amendments is the plan to elect the Governor in Presidential years, when New Jersey is traditionally Republican. Unless it is approved in time to become effective next year the plea will fail.
