A collection of documents and official correspondence setting forth the objection of Jewish bodies to the proposed change in the calendar will be published under the auspices of the Joint Foreign Committee, the body representing the Anglo-Jewish Association and the Board of Jewish Deputies. Lucien Wolf, who represented the committee at a conference of calendar reform held in June, made this announcement at a meeting of the Anglo-Jewish Association Sunday.
Leonard Montefiore presented the report of the Jewish Colonization Association concerning the colonization work in Russia. He stated that the closing of immigration to the United States has created a situation in European Jewry which compelled the leading Jewish organizations, including the Ica, to seek new methods of relief. One of these methods, to meet the new situation, was the assistance to Jewish colonization work in Russia. Another method was the development of the loan banks in Poland, which enabled one-third of the country’s Jewish population to obtain credit on reasonable terms.
Mr. Montefiore paid tribute to the memory of the late Franz Philippson. “Any one who will study the post-war problems, will find that the Ica, under the influence of Dr. Philippson, has made serious contribution to the two most pressing problems, emigration and colonization,” he said.
“It is seldom possible to write finis to any chapter of Jewish history, but not one of the six thousand Jewish emigrants who were stranded in various European ports when the United State immigration law was enacted, has remained in that condition,” he said.
