The United Jewish Fund of Toledo today presented a check for $250, 000 to the United Jewish Appeal as its contribution to the special Five Year Loan Project.
Toledo is the 19th Jewish community to remit actual cash to the UJA’s loan effort. A total of $57, 000, 000 has been contributed by the 19 communities to the project during five months, Dr. Joseph J. Schwartz, executive vice-chairman of the UJA, said.
At the start of the project, 143 communities pledged themselves to try to raise a total of $67, 627, 000 toward the loan by borrowing from local banks against UJA’s corporate guarantee of repayment over a five-year period. The UJA expects to receive, additionally, about $10,000,000 against pledges this summer as outstanding communities complete their bank arrangements. Leading figures in the successful completion of the Toledo loan were Abe J. Levine, president of the United Jewish Fund, and Joseph Cohan, chairman of its 1954 drive.
