In a unique program to assist Jewish life in the Soviet Union, as well as their own studies, students at the Max and Rose Heller Hebrew Academy, the Bayside, N.Y. day school, staged an eight hour “Torahthon.” The event several days ago raised over $1000 from the families and friends of the pupils, which will benefit a special fund created by the Greater New York Conference on Soviet Jewry.
According to Philip Chernofsky, a teacher at the school and coordinator of the program, the money will be used to provide books, tape cassettes and other Russian-language educational materials to Soviet Jews who wish to study Jewish culture, history and religion. “This is our contribution to Jewish life,” he said.
