Mayor Nathan Phillips, the first Jew to head this city’s municipal government, was reelected today to his fourth two-year term, which will give him a record of eight years as Mayor of a central Canadian metropolis.
At the same time, Samuel Berger, a Jew, was edged out in a bid for the Mayoralty of Ottawa, Canada’s capital. Mr. Berger resigned his seat on the Ottawa City Council to run for Mayer. He was defeated by the city’s former Mayor, Dr. Charlotte Whitton, who won the contest with a slim, 2,000-vote majority out of 80,000 ballots cast. The first Jew to enter Ottawa’s Mayoralty race in the city’s history, Mr. Berger’s candidacy was supported by all three of Ottawa’s newspapers.
