Arturo Toscanini and Bruno Walter, world famous conductors, are believed to have cancelled their engagements to conduct at the 1951 Salzburg Music Festival because of the recent anti-Jewish excesses by police and neo-Nazis in Salzburg, it was learned here today.
Austrian officials are quite concerned over the unfavorable reaction the incidents caused overseas. The head of the provincial government, Dr. H. Klaus, told the Salzburg council that the incidents have done the province much harm and will affect adversely attendance at the Salzburg festival because many American and British tourists have already cancelled reservations for the event.
