General Zvi Tsur, Israel Chief of Staff, warned at a public meeting here today that the United Arab Republic was spending enormous sums to build its military machine for a total war on Israel.
He added that while UAR leaders were running into difficulties in that effort, there was not the slightest doubt that they were making progress toward their goal. He added that while Israel was still “one step ahead,” it would have to work hard to maintain that advantage, which he described as a qualitative one.
(Addressing an audience in Damascus yesterday, President Nasser of the United Arab Republic, said: “The day of reckoning is drawing near and the United Arab Republic will drive the first nail into Israel’s coffin and destroy the Zionists before they succeed in conquering the Arabs.”)
The Israel Air Force now possesses “supersonic planes,” Shimon Peres, Deputy Minister of Defense, disclosed last night at the Aviation and Astronautical Congress. He said the Air Force had started the process of phasing in the new high speed Jets while pulling the last of its propellor planes out of service.
