Israeli sources reported today that heavy damage had been done to the Egyptian town of Ismaeliya, on the west bank of the Suez Canal, during an artillery duel last night provoked by Egyptian machine gun fire against Israeli positions on the east bank of the canal.
The Israelis returned the fire and when the Egyptians began to use heavy mortars from positions within the town, Israeli artillery fire was directed on the town in order to silence the Egyptian guns. The Israeli fire was so effective that the Egyptian guns were silenced before the hour for a cease-fire set by United Nations observers. This morning, damage in Ismaeliya could clearly be seen from the east bank of the canal. No casualties were reported on the Israeli side.
A 20-minute exchange of fire between Israelis and Jordanians was reported today on the Jordan River south of the Allenby Bridge. Jordanian forces on the east bank opened fire on an Israeli patrol moving along the western bank. The patrol returned the fire. No casualties were reported.
