The hope that the League of Nations will take eleventh hour measures to protect Jewish rights in the Saar and to guarantee absolute fairness and freedom for all the region’s inhabitants during the Jan. 13 plebiscite, is expressed in a resolution adopted here by the International Federation of Trade Unions.
The resolution was dispatched today to the League of Nations. It demands that the plebiscite should not be postponed but that secrecy of ballot should be made a primary and indispensable condition of the plebiscite.
ASKS STATUS QUO
In an appeal to the people of the Saar, the Executive of the International Federation of Trade Unions recommends the Saarlanders to vote for a status quo as the only way, under the present circumstances, of safeguarding freedom in the Saar. A return of the Saar to Germany under Hitler will mean the irretrievable loss of rights and liberties, the appeal says.
Meanwhile, much satisfaction is being expressed in Jewish circles here over the report from Saarbrucken that the Saar government will close its frontiers from Dec. 27 to Jan. 26 to guard against entry of terrorists who might stir up trouble during the plebiscite.
The order has the approval of the Plebiscite Commission of the Saar, which will supervise the voting. Admission to the Saar region after Dec. 27 will be only by special authorization of the Saar Ministry of the Interior.
