Transfer of the 4,400 Exodus refugees to two winter camps will begin on Sunday, when the first group of 800 will leave Poppendorf for Emden, it was announced today.
Additional groups will leave Poppendorf on successive days until the camp is emptied. The Am Stau Camp will then be cleared of all its occupants, who are going to Wilhelmshaven. The entire operation is expected to be completed by next Friday.
The camp leaders today began distributing identity cards to the refugees. The cards, which were devised by the Jews themselves, only identify the bearer by a number and his photograph, and state in English and Hebrew that the “bearer is a maapil (imigrant) of the Exodus 1947 who was brought by force to Germany from Haifa and is in exile temporarily on the way back to Eretz Israel.” A rubber stamp on each card shows a brick wall surrouned by barbed wire being pierced by the Exodus.
