The Havas News Agency reported today that G. G. Yagoda, Commissar for Home, Affairs, who is Jewish, was shifted to the post of People’s Commissar for Posts, Telegraphs and Radio.
The shifting of Yagoda, according to informed sources, indicates a new racial movement to put the key government positions in the hands of incumbents who are of strictly Russian blood. Yagoda was one of the few Jews in the recent administration who held a portfolio of such importance.
Observers said the shifts emphasize the tendency to prevent a recurrence of the Jewish majority in the political bureau which prevailed during the Lenin regime. Only one Jew, Lazare Kaganovitch, remains in the political bureau, it was said, and his functions are of a purely technical character.
Further indication of the movement in favor of more strictly Russian leadership was seen in the fact that only one Jewish general remains in the army.
