Radio Frankfurt announced today that German translations of some of the major works of Mendele Mocher Sforim, one of the most prominent Yiddish writers, have been published in West Germany.
The two-volume translation contains “Fischke der Krumer,” “Der Wunschring” and “Schloimele.” The radio announced the publication in a program honoring the Yiddish writer’s personality and literary art. Mendele Mocher Sforim was the pen name of Shalom Jacob Abramowitch, who was born in Russia in 1936 and died in 1917.
It was also announced today that the ministries of education of the 11 West German states have allocated a total of 40,000 deutschemarks ($10,000) for the publication in German of the works of Martin Buber, the world-renowned Israeli philosopher. The first volume is scheduled to appear next fall.
